No Move To Ban Porn Websites in Sri Lanka

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) says there is no move to ban access to porn websites in Sri Lanka.
TRC Director General Anusha Pelpita said that either a court order or a request from the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) will be needed to impose a ban on access to porn websites.
A news report last week said that Sri Lankans search for the word ‘sex’ on Google than most in the region.
This is according to Google Trends, a public web facility that shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.
According to Google Trends, search for the term ‘sex’ peaked in Sri Lanka during the week April 15-21, 2012, even as the partial data for the last week (December 23-29, 2012) shows it as second-highest week during which the term was Googled in 2012.
Pelpita told The Sunday Leader that there were over one million porn websites and although access to some have been banned in Sri Lanka they are still accessible through proxy websites.
He said that if parents want their children to avoid accessing porn websites then they should take the responsibility and act on it.
Pelpita noted that there are so many softwares which can be used to restrict access to porn websites.
He said that if porn websites are banned in Sri Lanka then it will slow access to even normal websites in Sri Lanka as a result of the technology used.
